To compete in today’s global economy, students will need the knowledge and skills that will prepare them for college and careers. In today’s classrooms, educators, businesses, and government officials have recognized that students are not engaged or motivated in their academic setting. High school graduates lack exposure to learning which links their work in school to college and careers—especially in the areas of academic and technical course content. To compete in this global society the Mobile County Public School System (MCPSS) has implemented Signature Academies into all high schools. The Signature Academy program is unique at only one high school. These academies will offer MCPSS students the opportunity to engage in real-world experiences, rigorous academic content, career exploration, Internships, job shadowing, and mentorship with Business Partners.

This year marks the second year for the implementation of the Signature Academy at Mattie T. Blount High School (BHS). Last year the inception of the Academy of Allied Health (Entry and Advanced Levels) was rolled out as our Signature. BHS healthcare program has been and continues to be an innovative medical model. This year, Sports Medicine and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) will join our allied health academy. Additionally, the Academy of Business Management Administration, Information Technology, CISCO, and Marketing Sales and Promotion; the Academy of Fine Arts and Human Services; and the Academy of Industrial Graphics, Manufacturing, Construction, and Transportation have been added to complete our academic infrastructure.

It is the belief of Mr. Jerome Woods, Principal of BHS along with the faculty, staff, and parents that we have ventured in the right direction as we provide a rigorous curriculum for our students. Through these academies, students will receive hands-on training inside and outside the classroom along with guest speakers, internships,  externships, and field trips related to the student’s area of focus. Furthermore, after the successful completion of their coursework, technical training, and senior project, those students who have successfully pass their comprehensive exam for his or her pathway—will receive credentialing or a certificate in their program. Students may also gain college credit at Blount through dual enrollment with Bishop State Community College.

MCPSS has not worked along in this process. Through the willingness and assistance from our many wonderful Business Partners, Mobile Area Education Foundation, and the Mobile Chamber of Commerce the Academies of Blount High School would not be the success it has become. As we strive to approach new and innovative teaching strategies that foster creativity, collaboration, and learning for our students; we invite you to come and see what Blount High School has to offer. We are challenged to make sure that all students are on track to graduate college and career ready.
