Academy of Allied Health Clinical Services

Mattie T. Blount High School Academy of Allied Health (Clinical Services) Entry & Advanced is a series of specialized programs designed to expose students to a wide range of careers in health care. Students experience learning in a rigorous and challenging instructional environment where knowledge and skills are obtained through career opportunities and technical requirements. Competency-based, learner-centered instruction enables students to participate in both classroom and on-site practices. The content of this program lends itself to a variety of on-the-job skills such as job shadowing, internships, projects, clinical service hours, and work-based learning experiences with life-like simulators. The Allied Health curriculum provides flexibility in meeting the needs of all students by providing a variety of instructional strategies.

  • Foundations: Foundations of Health, Therapeutic Services, and Continuum Internship (Advanced)
  • CRI: Certified Nursing Assistance (C.N.A.), Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/Automated External Defibrillator (AED)/First Aid

Pathway: Sports Medicine/Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)

  • Foundations: Foundations of Health, Emergency Services, Human Body Structure, and Sports Medicine
  • CRI: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/Automated External Defibrillator (AED)/First Aid, Alabama EMT Certification

Classes must be taken beginning the student's sophomore year.

Course Descriptions

Emergency Services: A one-credit course that introduces students to the emergency medical profession. Course content emphasizes safety, human structure and function, assessment of emergency clients, ethical behavior, and emergency care procedures.

Foundations of Health: A one-credit course, Foundations of Health introduces students to integrated academics, employability/career development skills, legal and ethical issues, communications, safety, and life skills. This course is a prerequisite to all courses in the Health Science cluster. (Tenth Grade Foundation Class)

Health Science Internship: Health Science Internship is a two-credit course focusing on basic knowledge and skills necessary for beginning health care workers. Health Science Internship reinforces and applies knowledge learned in classroom and laboratory settings. 

Human Body: A one-credit course designed to help students learn core content that emphasizes the structure and functions of cells, tissues, organs, organization of the human body systems, and medical terminology. Scientific processes, problem-based learning and critical thinking are integral parts of the course.

Introduction to Pharmacy: A one-credit course designed to provide students with the skills needed to effectively organize, develop, create, and manage a business. This course includes business management and entrepreneurship, communication and interpersonal skills, economics, and professional development foundations.

Sports Medicine: A one-credit course designed to teach students components of exercise science/sports medicine, including exploration of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, first aid, injury prevention, nutrition, rehabilitation, and performance enhancement philosophies. 

Therapeutic Services: is a one-credit course that introduces students to occupations and functions in the therapeutic services pathways. Careers in this area include nursing, medicine, physical therapy, surgical technology, respiratory therapy, emergency medical technician, and more.
