Academy Human Services, JROTC, & Performing/Visual Arts

Mattie T. Blount High School Academy of Human Services & JROTC Leadership the Academy of Human Services provides students with a comprehensive educational experience that fosters knowledge in the field of Food, Wellness, and Dietetics. A small learning community, the Human Services Pathway, is designed to educate students in the art of research, preparation, and consumption of healthy foods. BHS Cadets will develop intellectual curiosity, creativity, and independent thought through a rigorous academic core curriculum that prepares them for the challenges of post-secondary education. Through the JROTC Leadership Pathway, Cadets are prepared for leadership roles while being made aware of their rights, responsibilities, and privileges as American citizens. This program provides instruction and opportunities to benefit students, community, and our nation. Through internships mentoring opportunities, students will explore their future role in the Human Services curriculum. The importance of community service in the fields of health, law, and social sciences is strongly emphasized.

Through self-expressions, BHS students are exposed to the richness of the arts through Band, Dance, and Visual Arts. Scholars are introduced to a broad curriculum that emphasize performance, technique, history, and creative skills in the area of performing and visual expression. Moreover, students are required to actively participate in large and small ensembles, group and individual technical instruction, and interaction with performing artists. In addition to the development of theoretical skills, students will learn professional work ethics within this industry. Through these programs, students will develop an appreciation for and become an advocate of the arts.

  • Foundations: Family and Consumer Sciences, Chemistry of Food, Dietetics, Food and Nutrition, Event Planning, Sports Nutrition, and Senior Project.

Pathway: JROTC Leadership

  • Foundations: Army Leadership Education & Training I, II, III, & IV, Senior Project
  • CRI: JROTC National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) and CPR/First Aid

Classes must be taken beginning the student's sophomore year.

Course Descriptions

Family and Consumer Sciences: A one-credit course that provides students with core knowledge and skills in the areas of marriage and family, parenting and care giving, consumer sciences, apparel, housing, food and nutrition, and technology. A school-based laboratory is required for this course. (Tenth Grade Foundation Class).

Chemistry of Food:A one-credit course designed to provide an in-depth study of the application of science principles to the scientific investigation of the production, processing, preparation, evaluation, and utilization of food. A school-based laboratory is required for this course.

Dietetics: A one-credit course designed to provide students with advanced knowledge and skills used in nutrition and dietetics. Major topics include nutrition, meal planning, safety, food science, and professional behavior. A school-based laboratory is required for this course.

Food and Nutrition: A one-credit course designed to enable students to explore the relationship between food, nutrition, fitness, and wellness. Students learn how to select and prepare nutritious foods. A school-based laboratory is required for this course.

Army JROTC Leadership Education I: A one-credit course that provides first-year cadets with classroom and laboratory instruction in the history, customs, traditions, and purpose of Army JROTC. Emphasis is placed on leadership skills, principles, values and attributes, and diversity. (Tenth Grade Foundation Class)

Army JROTC Leadership Education II: A one-credit course designed to provide intermediate instruction in leadership and citizenry, and the expansion of skills taught in LET I. Emphasis is placed on communication techniques, cadet challenges, American citizenship, map reading, and the role of the U. S. Army.

Army JROTC Leadership Education III: A one-credit course designed to provide advanced instruction in leadership and citizenry, communication, history and career opportunities, and technology awareness. Students will have hands-on experiences as teacher/leaders within the cadet battalion.

Army JROTC Leadership Education IV: A one-credit course that provides opportunities for students to demonstrate leadership potential in an assigned command or staff position within the cadet battalion organizational structure. Emphasis is placed on negotiation skills and management principles.
